iPhone madness
December 2, 2008 at 6:45 pm | In BloggingSo I’ve updated the Wordpress software that runs this blog, allowing me to use the iPhone Wordpress application to post remotely. It doesn’t work perfectly — I initially typed this post and discovered that there was no way to save it. It was only after I refreshed the list of my posts (so that the number of new posts is zero) that a save button appeared. Weird. Hopefully this will work well enough for me to keep the blog up to date.
Sitting here in the new house…
June 4, 2008 at 11:09 pm | In Baby Makin', Blogging, Life, Our First Home, UpdateI realized that I haven’t written here for some time (can you hear the record scratching? That’s the sound of… count it… three consecutive posts about how infrequently I post).
Finally, the photos cometh….
January 16, 2008 at 4:20 pm | In Blogging, Photography, UpdateI finally have found a plug-in for this blog that I like for photo presentation: SimpleFlickr. It creates a Flickr-style Flash viewer that allows a user to browse through photos from my collection. My only dislike is that it cannot pull all the photos in a collection from Flickr; it only will take sets and group pools (Flickr-ites will know what I’m talking about here). I worked around this however by creating private groups solely for this purpose, putting photos in them grouped the way I want, and creating an individual page here on H.I.S.D. to show the SimpleFlickr viewer for a single group. On the positive side it was easy to set up — just uploading a folder, activating, and applying some style settings — and it worked right away.
Update
December 8, 2007 at 3:12 am | In Blogging, Life, Photography, WorkIt’s been quite a while since my last post. The last time I had time to put anything up here, much of San Diego County was still burning. Fortunately the extent of the firestorm was not as broad as expected. The numbers of injuries was far less than we planned for, and luckily the weather changed later in the week. Firefighters continued to contain the fires, and after about a week the Santa Ana winds died out, the temperatures dropped, the humidity increased, and the fires were finally out. A small flare threatened Malibu once again later in the week, but a repeat of the previous week’s disaster was averted when heavy rainstorms passed through Southern California. Since the hot dry period of the firestorm, it’s actually been quite wet and somewhat chilly (San Diego chilly) for the last couple weeks.
Run 7.17.07
October 18, 2007 at 8:07 pm | In Blogging, Reports, Running, SportsI think I’ve discovered how to load my Garmin maps into my posts. Thanks to the Notions blog from Canada for help with the code! I’m using Ascent to download runs from my Garmin (highly recommended for you Mac users).
Burma: As It Happens
September 27, 2007 at 11:10 pm | In Blogging, Politics
Those of you reading this have likely heard of the events of the last several days in the nation of Burma, also known as Myanmar. I encourage you to visit Ko Htike’s Prosaic Collection, a blog built by a Burmese man living in London who has received and posted images from eye witnesses to the terrible events there. The images are impressive and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Welcome to 2.0
July 27, 2007 at 1:17 am | In Blogging
Hello and welcome! I recently migrated my blog to my own domain, and have moved from Blogger’s posting software to a Wordpress blog that will give me a broader range of options, including having other pages on the site that are in other formats. I’m really excited about two components that I am in the process of setting up currently: the photography page, which replaces HippocratesPhoto, and our wedding page, which I will be using as a resource for our upcoming wedding to distribute information and news to our friends and family. Another exciting option that Wordpress will allow me to create is a community site, that allows users to sign up for their own account, bringing them into a community forum that will allow friends, family, and acquaintances to share photos, stories, and anything else that strikes their fancy. More on that when I have the time (and HTML know-how) to set it up.
Changes
June 24, 2007 at 2:14 am | In BloggingSeveral months ago, I declared a specific focus for this blog. Well, things don’t always work out the way we plan. I don’t think I will limit myself this time — writing solely about medicine so far hasn’t inspired a great deal of enthusiasm.
Whew!

If you are looking at my posts closely you’ll notice that it’s been quite a while since my last (thanks for the nudge, joe positive). I just finished a 14-day stint on the wards. I’m still surprised how my life continues to revolve around an artifical lunar calendar. As a resident, my assignments always depended on the month. My schedule might have included spending July in the Intensive Care Unit, August on the General Medicine wards, September on the Nephrology consult service, etc. I lived and breathed by the month. This month was hard, that month was cake. I thought that would all come to an end when I finished my residency, when my “normal” life was all set to begin.
