Second Anniversary

Nicole and I just celebrated two years of marriage. I am rather amazed that two years of marriage feels as it does. “Two years,” I can imagine my unmarried self thinking, “that’s practically a lifetime.” But how quickly these two years have gone by.

You could say we’ve had a lot of major events in our lives over these last 24 months: after getting married it was a fairly whirlwind-like progression of house buying, baby making, and family growing. We hardly feel like anything but newlyweds, although with the added luxury of knowing what it is that we need to do to make this little family unit work quite well. It’s like having the energy of youth with the experience of old age.

Meanwhile, over these last eight months and eighteen days, Cyrus is getting bigger, more mobile, and increasingly silly. I’m having trouble believing that he has already passed eight months of age, but seeing him pull himself up onto his feet, or zip across the room on his hands and knees, or deftly manipulate both every adult in the house makes his growing up an undeniable fact. In many ways he is predictable in his moods, his schedule and his dislikes. By “predictable,” of course, I mean completely unpredictable. I can easily predict what state he’ll be in by thinking about what makes sense, and guessing the complete opposite. But of course that’s what makes him more of a real person every time I see him: he already has personality quirks, foibles, and oddities. He must be related to me.
