I said something dumb today
September 28, 2007 at 9:18 pm | In LifeIt was petty, small, and mean. It was said out of anger more than anything else, and hurt the feelings of an innocent bystander. I’m not posting this for hugs, or condolences, or anything else about me. I’m more concerned that I hurt the feelings of a very nice person for no reason at all.
Burma: As It Happens
September 27, 2007 at 11:10 pm | In Blogging, Politics
Those of you reading this have likely heard of the events of the last several days in the nation of Burma, also known as Myanmar. I encourage you to visit Ko Htike’s Prosaic Collection, a blog built by a Burmese man living in London who has received and posted images from eye witnesses to the terrible events there. The images are impressive and heartbreaking all at the same time.

N. and I just arrived in this other city by the bay. She has a Psychiatry board review course this week, and I decided to join her for part of the week. Since I booked my trip well after her, we had separate flights. Mine left earlier and arrived later (hers being a direct flight). After spending Saturday evening with friends at our monthly International Dinner (this time at the beautiful Blue Bohéme) we stayed up until two o’clock packing. Of course I missed my 645 AM flight later that day, as we, both exhausted, slept through both alarm clocks. Fortunately N.’s flight was later in the morning and I was able to book a flight only four hours after the original, so we both arrived in this wonderful metropolis without further delay.
Run 9.19.07
September 20, 2007 at 1:05 am | In Reports, Running, SportsToday’s run was a great one — I love running around Mission Bay at night. If not for a couple bicyclists I think I would have been the only person around the bay tonight. It was cool and only slightly windy, mostly on the return leg. It was an out and back run starting at the Crown Point parking lot, continuing out to about the start of Mission Beach. I returned to my car feeling great. This was the longest run I’ve done in over two months. Continue reading Run 9.19.07…
Run 9.17.07, aka The Search For M.
September 17, 2007 at 10:39 pm | In Reports, Running, SportsToday’s run was the usual Monday run at Mission Bay, starting at the trailhead of the path on Crown Point Drive that circles the bay. There were 5 of us there today: M., J., C., N., and myself. We cruised out to the 2.5 mile mark (a red flower bush) and turned around, except for Mark who wanted to do a total of 7 miles, although we did notice him limping a bit about 2 miles or so into the run. He seemed fine, however, and we said our goodbyes and returned back to the starting point uneventfully.
Run 9.16.07
September 17, 2007 at 1:30 pm | In Life, Reports, Running, SportsYesterday morning N. and I went for a run with our friends J. and D.. J. and N. are about the same pace, and D. and I are about the same, so it worked out nicely. It was a really nice day, especially in the morning. We met at around 9 am and left for a quick run on Mission Bay: once again, my favorite body of water for running. D. and I were only going 5 miles, but considering that I’ve been off for so long and only have run 3 or 4 miles at a time recently, it felt like a good accomplishment. Continue reading Run 9.16.07…
Swim 9.15.07
September 15, 2007 at 7:43 pm | In Reports, Sports, Surfing/SwimmingAfter going surfing yesterday, I realized that my swimming is atrocious. As a child I spent many summer days in Ohio at the local municipal pool, and I grew up on the shores of Lake Erie, which afforded many ocean-like swimming situations. So the realization that my swimming skills had become atrophied prompted me to do some laps in the pool today, with the intention of doing some swimming on days that I’m not running. I’m hoping to incorporate this cross-training to make up for my recent laxity in running, but also to improve my surfing. I clearly was one of the weakest swimmers out there at Tourmaline yesterday, and I think it affected how much fun I was having.
Georgetown Book Shop
September 15, 2007 at 12:32 pm | In Life, Opinion, PoliticsThrough an acquaintance, I’ve just discovered the Georgetown Book Shop, which appears to have a great collection of American propaganda posters from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The true fascination comes when looking at posters that reflect the major political issues of the day; they sound remarkably familiar. I especially recommend the section of immigration posters. Many of the arguments used by anti-immigration forces back then (and much of the imagery in the posters) is still in use today, albeit in different forms.
Surf 9.14.07
September 14, 2007 at 10:18 pm | In Reports, Sports, Surfing/Swimming
Well, I wasn’t exactly hanging ten today. When I surf it’s more like practicing my floating skills and trying to avoid becoming shark bait. I went out to Tourmaline Surf Park with my friend and coworker B., who despite being in Southern California about 3 years fewer than me, has picked up the sport much quicker than I have. Oh, and he’s mastered beach volleyball in the last year as well. I guess I should chalk up my lack of native-sports abilities to my Ohio breeding; B. is from the Bay Area and at least has some Pacific connection that may explain his prowess.
Run 9.12.07
September 13, 2007 at 7:59 pm | In Reports, Running, SportsYesterday’s run was just a short jaunt along Mission Bay; although it took me about 30 minutes to get there. Apparently today there is a big speedboat race on the bay, and last night they had already fenced off the parking lots and most of the access to the bay in order to set up. After driving around in circles, I finally parked on Crown Point Drive and started my run by heading toward a gate in the fence that was left open for the few bikers and runners that remained in the park at that late hour, approaching 8:30 pm. After finding my way through the dark parking lot I reached the pathway that circumnavigates the bay’s many involutions and finished a nice out-and-back run of about 4 miles. The weather was perfect: a nice cool, still night along my favorite body of water. Continue reading Run 9.12.07…
